Seiko Presage Shippo Enamel Automatic – SJE079

The Seiko SJE079 is part of the Presage Shippo Enamel collection. The dial is created by master craftsmen trained in the multi-stage process of applying and polishing this special type of enamel. Inspired by the sea, the rich blue Shippo enamel dial has a subtle design that evokes the look of ripples in calm waters. The numerals are the same font as the 1913 Laurel which was Seiko’s first wristwatch. The crystal is a box-shaped sapphire with anti-reflective coating on the inside and the screw down display case back reveals the 26 jewel movement with a power reserve of 45 hours. The case is made of stainless steel with a super-hard coating and has a brown crocodile strap with a tri-fold push button clasp.

Shippo Enamel was developed in Japan in the 17th century. It has gradations with unique depth and richness produced through repeated applications of glaze and firing, and the sheen and shine are created by polishing after the firing. The way it is polished gives it a transparency challenging to achieve on a dial that is no more than 1mm thick. The Shippo enamel dial is handcrafted. There will be some little dimples on the dial which is a unique feature of a hand crafted Shippo enamel dial. Each dial may be slightly different adding to the artistic nature of this dial.
