Since its inception, Awake has pursued a vision of conscious and poetic watchmaking, where the craftsman’s hand becomes an extension of time itself. With the Sơn Mài – FRAGMENTS collection, Awake continues this journey by bringing together traditional Vietnamese lacquer, natural mother-of-pearl, and the ancient Japanese art of Raden in a mesmerizing harmony of light, texture, and color. The result is a dial that feels alive—an iridescent mosaic handcrafted by skilled artisans, capturing and refracting light so that every passing second feels like a suspended moment in time.

Rooted in centuries-old Vietnamese craftsmanship, the dial is created using the refined lacquer technique known as Sơn Mài. The lacquer originates from the sap of the Rhus verniciflua tree, which grows in northern Vietnam and produces only small quantities after years of growth. Master artisans carefully purify this precious material before applying it in multiple layers. Individually selected fragments of natural mother-of-pearl are then placed by hand, forming a luminous mosaic whose colors subtly shift with changing light. The result is a dial of remarkable depth and movement—sometimes reminiscent of soft twilight skies, sometimes like reflections dancing across calm water.

Each dial requires nearly fifteen hours of meticulous craftsmanship, followed by the application, drying, sanding, and polishing of numerous lacquer layers that reveal an extraordinary brilliance. Awake enhances this artistry with its signature luminous “chiaroscuro” aesthetic: faceted steel hands and indexes filled with Super-LumiNova® BGW9 remain elegant by day and glow softly at night, revealing the dial’s hypnotic reflections without overwhelming its beauty.

Encased in recycled 316L stainless steel measuring 39mm, the watch features a sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, 50 meters of water resistance, and a sapphire display caseback. Inside beats the Swiss automatic La Joux-Perret G101 movement, offering a reliable 68-hour power reserve. Completing the piece is a handcrafted Jean Rousseau calfskin strap lined with Alcantara, bringing comfort and refined elegance to the wrist.
