Grand Seiko Evolution 9 Spring Drive – SLGA023

Grand Seiko’s SLGA023 is part of the Evolution 9 Collection and is housed in a robust 43.8mm titanium case that is 13.8mm thick and 51.5mm lug to lug, with a sapphire crystal, uni-directional diving bezel, and screw down crown providing 200m of water resistance. This watch is the first serial production use of one of Grand Seiko’s newest Spring Drive movements, the Caliber 9RA5, assembled by the skilled artisans of the Shinshu Watch Studio and engineered to run 120 hours (5 days) when fully wound, with a power reserve indicator on the dial side, and an astonishing accuracy of +/- 10 seconds per month.

Grand Seiko is known for intricate dials and incredible casework utilizing Zaratsu polishing to create a mirror finish. The case of this watch uses the Evolution 9 Style, which expresses Grand Seiko’s new design language and will be an important part of their signature for years to come. With its complex faceted case, highly legible hands, and prominent markers, it provides ergonomic proportions for its distortion-free finish. The “ushio” dial texture is inspired by the dynamic tides caused by the Kuoshio current, which flows northwards past Japan towards the Arctic North Pacific and is known as the “Black Stream”, one of the largest ocean streams in the world. This year the dial has been created in blue with a matching blue bezel. The titanium used is Grand Seiko’s special Hi-Intensity Titanium, providing scratch and corrosion resistance at a weight 30% lighter than stainless steel. This watch comes with a folding pushbutton clasp on its 5-link titanium bracelet, with secure lock and a solid, sliding adjuster, giving the wearer flexibility both in varied wearing conditions and for wearing over a wetsuit.
